Though the apps take different approaches to personalising your pen tools, they both provide a superb user experience. We love Notability’s approach, which contributes to the app’s minimalist look.

Chances are, when you change a setting for a tool, it’s probably going to stay like that for years, maybe even forever. It makes them more accessible, but we don’t typically use settings often to need them in our workspaces. Notability’s settings are in one place, unlike in GoodNotes which has them scattered throughout the app. GoodNotes doesn’t have any theme options, but then again no other note-taking app does. You also get some themes in Notability that can change your UI colour, they are quite beautiful. Notability has a more minimalist user interface (UI) that doesn’t look as cluttered as GoodNotes. In both apps, we use our digital notebooks as we prefer them to all the templates available. In both apps, your custom templates have to be single pages, though. You can save custom page templates to the app libraries from either images or PDFs. No matter the page customisation options, sometimes it’s better to import your own, and both apps let you do this. You do have the option to not use covers if you want. That way you get to see what’s in your notebooks without having to open them. We find covers to be a disadvantage though, because it’s better to have no cover for your notebooks. It also has covers to make your notebooks look pretty on the homepage. GoodNotes has three colour options for your pages, which is not much. These also have line-spacing options which you won’t find in GoodNotes. Notability also has more page colours, even though they are limited to the basic templates in the app. GoodNotes’ shop is still new, so it doesn’t have many items. Notability, however, has a larger collection of page templates because of its gallery and premium templates. In either app, you get a respectable number of page sizes and orientations. Creating new notesĬreating new notes in both apps is fairly simple, and both apps have a lot of options for your notebooks.
